Review Policy

How reviews work on The Scent Bureau — who can write one, what the rules are, and what we do about them.

Who can write a review

You need an account with a confirmed email address, and you must have clicked through to the seller from that listing in the last 90 days. Up to three reviews a day.

The rules you agree to

  1. Write about your own experience with this bottle, not someone else's.
  2. Be accurate. Say what you noticed, and don't state as fact what you can't know.
  3. No abuse, and nothing defamatory. Criticise the product or the service, not people.
  4. Don't accept anything in return for a review, and don't review a shop you work for or are connected to.
  5. A review that breaks these rules can be marked not counted or removed. You'll be told why, and you can appeal.

You can edit or delete your own review at any time. An edited review is marked "edited".

When it appears

Straight away. We don't hold reviews back, whether they are good or bad, and we never edit anyone's words.

How reviews add up to a rating

A review counts for more when the reviewer confirmed they bought it, when it is recent, when the reviewer has a good track record on the Bureau, and when other readers found it helpful. Every listing also shows the plain average when it differs.

How long a review counts

Reviews don't expire. An older review stays readable and keeps counting, but it counts for less than a recent one — so a shop's rating follows how it behaves now, without deleting its history.

How we check reviews

Automatic checks look for unusual patterns, but they never act on their own — a person makes every decision.

Reporting a review

Anyone signed in can report a review, and a seller can report reviews on their own listings. A report does not hide anything: the review stays up and keeps counting while we look at it. We look at every report within 14 days, and we tell the person who reported it what was decided.

What can happen to a review

  • Not counted — we doubt it, so it stays readable but stops affecting the scores. The author is told why.
  • Removed — it is proven fake or clearly breaks the rules. The author is told why.
  • Reviewer standing — if the reason concerns manipulation, the writer's standing returns to New for 180 days.
  • Appeals — the author can appeal any of these, with one escalation.

Deleting your own review

You can delete it yourself at any time, and it is really deleted. We keep only a note of which review was on which listing and when, for 180 days, and nothing else — no text, no name.

Sellers' replies

A seller can reply publicly to any review of theirs, free, and their reply appears straight away. A reply is held to the same rules as a review, and anyone signed in can report one. Reporting it changes nothing a reader sees; if a moderator agrees, the reply comes off the page and the seller is told why.
